Channeling Power with Wisdom
Think of the power you’ve gained from Martial Arts as being a fuel, like wood or gasoline. It’s valuable because it drives you and your goals. The power you receive from your Martial Arts training also drives you on the path towards wisdom – to make good decisions, be committed to your self and help others. You’ll discover that you don’t need to overpower a situation to resolve it or a challenge to achieve it. Small amounts of power specifically applied will enable you to accomplish much more than you may have thought possible.
But acquiring power and possessing it is only the first small step toward using it wisely. The second and biggest step is giving it away. Hoarding power is a selfish gesture, and that runs counter to a major tenet of martial arts: giving something back – to your family, your community and Martial Arts. Giving away your power recklessly is of no value, either. Wisdom comes from using power judiciously, but with a generous spirit.
“I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us that the less we use our power the greater it will be.”
~Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States
