One of the best aspects of martial arts training is the people you meet.  Martial artists are such respectful, polite, well-mannered people and they are a joy to be around. Martial arts, martial arts.

Having a great training partner and being a great training partner, is the key to getting maximum benefit out of each and every workout.  arts, martial arts.

There are 3 keys to being a great training partner in the dojo so everyone minimizes the risks and maximizes the benefits. Martial arts, martial arts.

1) Safety First

Bugo-Kumite, also known as sparring with armor, is one of the best ways to work your timing and reaction.  It is also a great cardio workout.  When engaging in an activity like this we all have to remember SAFETY FIRST.  Simple tips, such as “hit but don’t hurt” and “touch, tap, never rap” remind us that the goal is to help each other get better without hurting anyone. We hit pads, body shields, and heavy bags to improve our power and to let out any built up stress, but when working with a partner the focus should be on timing and movement. This way the activity is safe for everyone! Martial arts, martial arts.

2) Hygiene

When training with a partner, good hygiene habits are a must! Taking the time to make sure your uniforms and t-shirts are clean and odor free will be much appreciated by your teammates. Sometimes it’s good to go through and determine which workout shirts and uniforms should be retired and used as rags to clean your car! Trimming finger nails and toe nails are another good safety and hygiene tip. Martial arts, martial arts.

3) Attitude

Having a training partner with a great attitude is the best! Be a partner that is intense, wants to get better, and helps others get better. Come in to every class eager and focus on improving each time you are o the mat. Remember that you are in competition with no one but yourself. Getting overly competitive can only lead to injuries and dangerous training sessions and nobody wins when that happens. We like it when each training session is Win – Win for everyone! Martial arts, martial arts.

Being a great training partner and having great training partners is the key to life-long martial arts training. Train hard, be safe and enjoy the process! Martial arts, martial arts.
