What Makes Us Do The Things We Do?
” If you can dream it, you can do it.” ~ Walt Disney
Why do we do the things we do? What is it that makes us act the way we do? Motivation! Motivation can come from inside or outside of an individual.
There are two types of motivation known as extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation is what motivates us to do activities or act a certain way to earn a reward or avoid some kind of punishment. Some examples are studying so that you can get good grades, cleaning your room so that you do not get grounded by your parents, participating in individual sports so you can earn trophies and medals or competing in a school contest so that you can win money for college. Each of these examples shows that behavior is motivated by a reward or avoiding a negative result.
Intrinsic motivation is acting a certain way because you really enjoy it and find it rewarding and fulfilling. Some examples are participating in the sport you like because you find it enjoyable, such as martial arts, playing difficult board games with your friends because you like the excitement and how it stimulates your brain, or reading a book because its calming, relaxing, and you enjoy learning new information or letting your mind drift into a fairy tale.
Discovering what motivates you will help you find new and innovative ways to accomplish your goals both on and off the mat. So take a minute to reflect on exactly what it is that motivates you and then take action in the direction of your dreams!
